Australia’s Glenn Maxwell put on fire at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday as he scored an unbeaten 201 runs off 128 balls and took the game away from Afghanistan in match number 39 of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Afghanistan was on the verge of producing the biggest upset of the tournament as they took 7 wickets of Australia for just 91 runs defending a total of 291 runs.
The five-time champions kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were looking to bowl out between 100 – 150 runs. But ‘The Big Show’ Maxwell didn’t give up and single-handedly won the game for Australia with his maiden double-hundred in ODIs and produced one of the biggest comebacks in the ODI World Cup. The 35-year-old also became the first batter to score a double hundred while chasing.
However, Maxwell is not the first batsman who has crossed the 200-run mark in the marquee event. Before him, two players had reached this milestone in the ODI World Cup. The star batter smashed 215 runs off 147 balls as West Indies posted 372 runs for the loss of 2v wickets and went on to win the match by 73 runs.
The next player to add his name to the list is the New Zealand opener Martin Guptill who scored an unbeaten 237 runs off 163 balls against West Indies in the Quarter-final of the 2015 ODI World Cup.
Talking about the overall record, a total of nine players have scored 11 double centuries in ODI cricket so far. Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was the batter to enter the list after he scored an unbeaten 200 runs against South Africa in Gwalior in 2010. On the other hand, India skipper Rohit Sharma has the most double centuries in ODIs and is also the highest individual scorer in an ODI innings. The veteran batter has three ODI double centuries to his name with 264 being his highest score.
